T-5 stuff

Well, my 165,000 mile original clutch in my '91 Camaro Z28 finally got changed this spring. Put in a new SPEC Stage II, had the stock flywheel machined, new Pro 5.0 shifter, and RedLine D4 ATF.

Anyway, the old clutch would hook up in 1st and then after shifting into 2nd, it would "ease" it's way into gear. And at highway speed in 5th gear, if you pushed on the gas, it would jump 600-700 rpm before even starting to pull.

Well, I now have a good 1000 miles on the new clutch. Got into a little impromptu racing today up into 3rd gear. Well, when shifting between gears it was doing the same thing - slowly engaging and then would start to pull. It did this a couple of different times.

Now, I was doing a little power shifting and it wouldn't even give me a squeal out of the tires on the 1-2 shift. If I slowed down my shift, it would grab and pull fine. It was just on the power shifting that it would do this.

Any thoughts? Is my clutching having problems? Could it be a hydraulic issue? Is it a tranny itself issue?

Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

Here is quick run down the car itself:

1991 Camaro Z28
TPI 305/stock T-5 (WC?)
165,000 miles on motor, tranny, rear end
3.08 gears (3.42 gears and new carrier going to be installed)
SPEC Stage II clutch
Prothane tranny and torque arm mounts
1LE driveshaft
cold air intake
TPIS TB air foil
FastChips Stage II chip
Borla adjustable cat back

I think that is about it for any kind of power adders. Last year, minus the air foil, clutch, and poly mounts, the car ran a best of 14.7 @ 97mph with a 2.40 60' time

Thanks,

it is clear to me that the disk is skidding,
why???, i'm affraid you will have to take the whole thing down anyway to see why.

Have you replaced the pressure plate? After that many miles its possible that the prssure plate just cant hold the clutch against the flywheel good enough anymore.

An entirely new clutch assembly went in and the flywheel was machined. Went with the SPEC Stage II clutch and flywheel, new pilot bearing and throw out bearing.

Ok then it could be something with the hydraulic clutch, but they ususally dont cause problems since they are self adjusting. This is a wild guess, but maybe the slave cylinder is not releasing as fast as it should when you let off the clutch pedal. I have seen this sort of thing happen to drum brake cylinders, but never clutch slave cylinders. Over time its possible the brake fluid in the cylinder could gum up (just like in drum brakes) and slow the movement of the slave cylinder piston. It might be worth it to jack the front of the car up, and watch the slavy cylinder/fork while someone inside the car presses the clutch. I would have them press the clutch and release it slowly, then have them press the clutch and release it quickly, and see if it engages any faster. Of course do this while the car is off...

Well, another thought was that there could definitely be moisture in there with the fluid. It is the original unit and it seems like there is a small leak at the slave (although the fluid level never drops). I would think this could effect the amount of hydraulic pressure in the system.
