B&M megashifter

Hey

Ive seen a couple of guys out there that have the B&M shifters. What benefits do u get from those things. I am going to be getting a transgo shift kit, would I see a better improvement with the B&M shifter too. Or what are those shifters for.

Thanks

If you like to manually shift or like just the looks I'd say go for it. Basically it's a ratchet design shifter. This way you can bang as hard as you want thru each gear, but it only moves one gear at a time.
I manually shifted once before without it and slid into N @WOT = collapsed lifter on the 305 and got the 350.

Hurst makes a dual gate shifter that looks good as well but costs a little more.

They don't affect the transmission performance at all. It's a ratchet action shifter, which means this: You know how if you want to go from "OD" to "D", you push the button in, pull back a notch, and let the button up? You also know how you could just hold the button in and go right from OD to 1st at 60 MPH?

Well the ratchet action doesn't let that happen. To go from OD to D, you pull back on the stick, and then let go- the stick snaps up, and the shifter moves into D. To go from OD to 2nd? Bang the stick down twice.

Racing, and going from first to second? Just bang the stick forward.

The ratchet action isn't used to go between park/reverse/neutral/od. You lift up on the trigger for that.

Er, well, you can ratchet from OD into Neutral- but that's for an occasion where you break at the racetrack. Another nice feature about that is you can't "by mistake" push the stick into Park- the ratchet action stops at neutral.

It's fun; I'm glad I put it in.

You also can't go from neutral to reverse if you've ratched from drive to neutral. You have to pull it back to drive, pull up on the trigger then push it ahead to reverse.

I use one in my race car. As mentioned above when you shift through the gears it only goes one gear at a time. My transmission, TH400, has a reverse pattern valve body. PRN123. From neutral I pull back once and I'm in first gear. pull again and I'm in second. Third pull is third. After that there's no way to get to neutral or reverse without slowing down and downshifting.

Ratcheting shifters in a street vehicle is just a fun factor. They're not really needed if you drive around all day in D or OD letting the tranny do all the shifting.
