Stock c-clips and Mosier axles

I bet those of you that have run into this problem know exactly what I am going to say.

The stock c-clip doesn't fit the axle!!!! I need to take about .05" off.

A long time ago I read on here that someone turned the axle down to make it fit. Aren't these axles heat treated? Could you take the material off with a regular tool steel bit or did you have to get your hands on some exotic material?

My local speed shop said that it might be easier to modify the c-clip itself instead of the axle. I am weary about this because I fear the clip might break and bugger the gears.

Could someone help me!!! I swear I will never touch another axle after this one goes back in! Thanks guys.

I am not surprised. Be glad that the dimension is on the small
side. I have a setup with too much end play in the axles and
they bang. This is with an Eaton posi & Moser axles.

Yes they are hardened. Same with the C clips. Anyway, you will
need a carbide tool to cut the axle groove. Carbide is common in
machine shops. If you have the C clip reduced a surface grinder
should be used.

You'll need to take some good measurements as you want the
axle end play to be 16 to 20 thou max.

The center shaft prevents the axles from going in any further
and the C clip prevents the axle from moving outward.

RBob.

Thanks RBob, I fodn another speed shop and he might be able to do it. I have to call him later, his wife said it shouldn't be a problem but to check with him.

I know how important the clips are and that's why I am sceptical about modifying it instead of the axle.

Where doesn't the clip fit? I haven't installed my mosers yet, but I have tried the clips on them. Mine fits ok. I also tried them on a set of 2nd gen 28 spline axles, a little tight on those. It's too bad the 2nd gen axles are 1/4 in. to short. There's plenty of those around. I even thought about using a 1/4 in. spacer between the axle and the drum.

I found that I do not have to modify the axle, however the clip needs a little trimming.

When the clip was stamped out, the edges are not perfectly straight. The sides become tapered. A couple seconds with a file and it was golden.

No need to turn down my nice, new, case hardened axle!!

I just installed my mosers today. NO trouble what so ever. They fit like a glove. Finaly got my rebuilt 10 bolt in. The 410s are GREAT, just going to have to go to a larger tire.

Where did you get your axles from? I am just about ready to send this one back and buy one from GM!

I ordered them from gearsareus.com, but they came straight from moser. The ones from moser are quite a bit stronger than stock gm. I don't think they are the weakest link in the 10 bolt though. Have you called moser? If I had any trouble, I'd call them. I wouldn't do any cutting or grinding on them though, unless they tell you to do so.
