Elect to Manual Speedo

Is it possible to change an electric speedo 700r4 to a manual speedo with out tearing the whole trans apart? One guy at the GM place said that all i needed was a new Tail shaft housing and the proper gears...another said that he thought the relucter ring for the electric speedo was pressed on and he didn't know if it would be possible to go to a manual speedo....the trans is kinda junk atm and im goin to put a new one in somtime...but i need a speedo...tickets suck
Thanks

That depends on what the trans came out of. My GTA uses the same drive gear as a manual does. Take the sensor out and look at it. If it has a gear on it, all you have to do is change the adapter. If it has just a magnet, you have to have the gear pulled off, and replaced.

The sensor is on the left side of the trans, on the tail housing. It will have some wires plugged into it. It is held into the side of the trans with a bracket and bolt. [ 10 mm wrench] Dought if you can see the #s on it without removing it. When you take it out you'll lose some trany fluid, so have some on hand.
