How difficult are gears

I am wanting to put a 98 Chevy 1500 posi w/ either stock or Richmond 3.73s in my 90 Sierra? I was planning on having it done but labor costs so damn much.... So How difficult is it to put in gears w/ the posi? what do you need to do to make sure you get everything aligned right the first time so you don't have to take it out again?

Thanks,

putting in a posi or locker shouldn't be too bad since you don't mess with the pinion. But doing gears is not for novices. It takes a lot of time and patience and the right tools. You could be pressing in and put the pinion a dozen times till you get it right if you've not done it before.

i did mine myself... PITA. i got lucky i only had to remove the pinion twice to get the correct number of shims between the bearing/gear. the first time the teeth were barely touching with only 1 shim. i also had a shop to so everything in with an impact gun and all that good stuff.

There's a reason why the labor costs so much. Its specialized work that requires special tools, knowledge, and experience. Thats not cheap.

If you do it yourself, at best you'll have a whining rear end, at worst it'll break on you right away.

I agree with these guys! I'm currently working on a rear for a 69 Camaro at work 3.08 to 3.73 also converting to power trax. PITA!!! Ive been working on it off and on for a week, of course thats only in my spare time. I would suggest fing a rear end with the gears already intalled, for a truck that shouldent be hard at all and then going to a posi unit. Why?? Because your 90 rearend is the same as 73 on up although the 98's most likely have ABS. I dont see that being a problem though.

I wasn't planning on doing it myself for all the reasons ya'll are giving, I've been to salvage yards, but for some reason all I can find is opens w/ 2.73s or 3.08s & can't find many posi 3.73 rears, a couple that I did find have 130k plus miles on them... So a while back I found a posi out of a 98 truck w/ 30k on it & I just need the gears now. My buddy is a mechanic in our area maybe I can see if his shop does rears.

Thanks for all ya'lls help,

i did mine myself... took a while... rear end doesn't whine either. the only reason it would whine would be if theres not enough shims between the pinion and pinion bearing. the whining is from the teeth of the ring gear not being far out enough to make full contact with the ring gear. im only 18 and i did it..just requires patience i guess. if u can picture it working, it is very easy. if u can't change ur own oil, step away from ur car...
