Trans swap...torque converter spline count

Hello.
I have searched the archives for this but I only end up confunsing myself more. I have a trans that I was told is out of an '86 z-28. I bought it without a torque converter because I'm buying a new one. When I count the splines on the input shaft, I get 27 on the bigger part of the shaft and 30 on the smaller part. Which one do I go by to get the correct count for the converter? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The input shaft is the one that turns, the other shaft is the stator. The 1986 should be a 30 spline, as yours is.
