Speedometer Cable Broke. Why???

I have an 82 camaro with a Th350 transmission. (Yes it really is a TH350. I had it swapped it in after the 200c went kaput on me). Anyway, the lower speedometer cable broke right where it goes into the tranny. It was binding and the whole cable twisted. At some point it snapped. My question is what is there to make it bind where it goes into the tranny and eventually break? If I have to remove the tailshaft to look inside, are there any tricky things i might misalign, break, or otherwise screw up? I've never pulled it off, and I don't want to get myself in trouble.
