should i change my tranny fluid or not?
should i change my tranny fluid or not?
my car seems to have lost the punch it once had. i gave it a tune up and all that, but no help. as far as i know the fluid and filter in the tranny have never been replaced. my question is could this be the problem of losing power if the filter is clogged? the fluid needs to be replaced as it has the burnt smell to it, but i have been told that doing this to a high mileage tranny sometimes can do more harm than good. is this true? if i do it will i get my power back? thanx

there are no filters in the rear end. i don't think that you will get the puch back. if it is a high milage car that you should probably do a comprsion check. that might be the reason it is lacking power

And after installing the rebuilt trans, remember two things: 1, change the fluid/filter yearly. 2, always check the TV cable adjustment when you do your yearly fluid/filter change. Search this forum for "TV cable", and there's also a tech article in thirdgen.org's tech section.

burnt fluid means its been overheated. This happened when the radiator poped in my dads car. The trans fluid goes to the radiator to cool off and the fluid will overheat if there are probs. with the cooling system. Change it first (its not hard and its good four your trans) and see where it goes from there

A plugged up filter usually results in hard, late shifts; along with a groaning or howling sound, followed by loss of everthing except 1st and reverse.
