T56 gurus.....Is my input shaft bearing going bad???

There has been a noise coming from around the bellhousing for a while now and it's been geting a bit worse lately. It's a clunking/rattling noise that only happens at idle. When it does make the noise the motor will stumble and sometimes stall out. If I hold the rpms around 1000 the noise goes away and it runs smooth. Also, when I'm driving, the noise is nonexistent. The noise is evident at idle if I'm in any gear. I've had the transmission out in the last couple days and had the flywheel resurfaced and put in a new clutch and pressure plate. I'm thinking that my input shaft bearing is on it's way out. Is this a common thing? What I'm thinking may have caused it or may have increased the noise is the fact that my distributor broke (the weld that holds the base to the shaft broke and there was about 6 degrees of play that would cause the car to jerk violently when cruising in 5th or 6th gear. If anyone has any other ideas as to what the noise is please let me know.

Thanks,
Stephen

The T56 is pretty noisy at idle with the car stationary out of gear and the clutch engaged (pedal out). There are TSBs for 4th gens covering this subject.

It should go away when you push the clutch pedal in.

Kinda like the old "Rock Crusher" 4-speeds, they were noisy SOBs too but held up well to hard use w/ lots of torque on them.

I had thought about that but it has never made this noise before in the 2 years that I've had it. Also, it makes the noise both if the clutch is in or out. Also, it will stall the motor at times. This makes me think it is something mechanical.
