Rear Gears!!!!!????????

ok, I have found a set of 4.11 posi gears out of a second generation firebird....

it is the whole rear end and it has disc brakes, so I want it... right???

will this work???
is it too wide???? or anything like that????

btw I have a 91 RS 305 TBI

also, If I get this what will I have to do with the speedo....

thanks a bundle

also: I can get this rear end for less than 100 dollars, so I'm pretty excited about this

Well second gens used a leaf spring system, so unless you're prepared to weld, it might be a bit of a struggle to fit.

However my brother is getting a 77 trans am today, and it has like 2.56 gears or something with drum brakes so he might be interested. Email me if you are interested in selling it. Actually I live in Illinois, so I doubt that he would be interested in paying shipping on the whole thing, but if you could get all of the brake stuff along with the gears and carrier out I will talk to him and see if he wants it. I imagine that if he does he would pay a little extra over what you are paying for your trouble.

he lives in southwest VA

no, he's not the one with the rear
its some of his family.... "he" is my uncle....

i don't know if he will be willing to deal with it either though....

could someone be so kind as to tell me what exactly is different and what would have to be done to put this rear in my car?
thanks a bundle

I think the width is a bit different but dont know if it is to much to use or not. It uses leaf springs instead of coil springs. You would have to take and set you rear right next to it and cut the brackets off of it and weld them to the other one in the exact same place as they come off of your origional. If you dont get everything just right the car could either sit funny, or not go together at all. It is possible but you must be real carefull and know how to weld real well.

On the torque arm I think someone might make a kit that attaches it to the rear somehow. I dont remember where I saw it though.

well, what would I have to do to just use the gears and forget the disc brakes???

could I take the gears out and put them in a third gen rear?

what about my rear end? 2.73 (stock)

i'd really like to have this

I hope you guys plan on a good cam to match them gears, or you'll make the same mistake I did.

No, you couldnt use the gears either. They are for an 8.5" 10 bolt and thirdgens used a 7.5 or 7.65 10 bolt. The stuff wouldnt fit in your rear end.

Mark, I know that those gears wouldnt match anything near a stock cam. It would be my brothers car, and well he didnt want to use those gears anyway. He wanted the carier so he could put something like 3.23s or 3.42s on it. I dont think he would want to put anything close to 4:11 because he has a 3 spd auto and well, his gas mileage would, well.... not exist. He has a 77 trans am special edition that looks just like the one in smokey and the bandit and has a pontiac 400.

well, I've got an LT1 cam sitting in my bedroom floor right now waiting on me to get started on my new job (WAL MART, YIPEE!!) and get some money

so these are useless to me basically?? ok cool
but for future reference would the LT1 cam and 4.11's work well??? or not???

thanks
Cody

Better than a stock cam, but 4:11 gears are still awfull steep for a lt1 cam. I think that something like 3.42 would probably work good. 3.73s will give you a good feel off the line but I think that the lt1 cam is still probably to small to match up and work efficiently with them.

I am by no way an expert on what gears match with what size cams but from what I have heard that is how it seems to me. I would ask around before you buy gears, and It might also make a difference with what tranny you have.
