87 to 85 tranny swap
87 to 85 tranny swap
hey guys, i just bought a used rebuilt tranny for my 85 iroc z but its a 87 so it has the different speedometer linkage, what do i need to do to properly switch it. Is there a kit i can buy and were can i get it, do i need to switch the govenor or anything like it, the newly rebuilt tranny is all by probuilt, its a pretty crazy bulitt proof tranny. Can i unbolt the back part of the tranny and swap it with the other for the speedometer cable, rather than the electrical hookup? thanks for any help

P.S. can u think of any opther problems i might run into

I was under the impression that you simply take off the one bolt clamp, pull out the driven gear sensor housing, and put in the driven gear mechanical drive housing.
If you need to change the drive gear on the output shaft, you have to pull the tailshaft housing off, but you don't have change the entire housing.
You sure it's an '87? I thought Dana only worked with '88-up. Or, do you mean it was professionally built, not necessarily one from Pro Built Automatics specifically?

Things aren't adding up very well here. 27 spline was '82-'84. '85 should be 30 spline, as certainly should an '87.
The govenor is something that is tailored to your engine and rear end gears. If you're happy with the shift points in your current tranny, then putting it in the new one would maintain that calibration. I think I'd try the built tranny as is, though.
