Rearend Help Needed

Would it be easier to just find a rearend with the gears I want in it or to buy some gears, a posi, and have a proffessinal install them. A friend of mine has a guy who will put the gears and posi in for $600, only problem is that this guy lives in Lubbock. Anyone have any other ideas? My rear is in good shape but I should probably check it out just in case.

gears and install kit will run you 350, plus 100 for a posi. i tihnk people tend to over chage for gear installs, i'd do it for 100 with the rear out of the car, so 600 isn't bad for new parts. if you could find the gears you want a rear should run you around 200-300 at a swap meet

I talked to my friend's mechanic yesterday and he said he knows a guy with an '01 Camaro rear. It's got disc brakes and he said a 3.42 gear ratio but he wasn't sure. He said he'd get back to me with all the info and a price. How does this sound? Will it just replace the old rear or will it need to be modified?
