5 spd Synchronizer Problem?

A 91 T/A with 5 spd transmission that was bought used last year. It has started to grid third gear when you try to shift during accelerating. Shifts OK if you’re just taking it easy. Checked the fluid and it looks like it has regular gear lube in it instead of the ATF. Hyd. clutch fluid level is OK.

Is the syncro gone? Could it just be the fluid? What is a reasonable estimate for rebuilding if its just the syncro’s? Anything else I should be aware of or check?

The syncros are most likely shot. If you ask, you will get different answers as to using ATF or gear lube, But I have a Borg Warner T5 manual and it says to use only ATF, World Class or NWC. A refresh kit is pretty cheap $90( for a World Class T5). Check the link they be able to help you out. You might want to order a set of syncro springs just to be safe. Only $10. and you wont know if you have a broken one till you tear it down. This is a job you can do and will save some $$$. 300 to 600 for a rebuild or you can due it for about 100. Also Synth. ATF is well worth the price.
