help me
I had a problem that started yesterday, where when i stopped and put the car into park.. (automatic) it wouldnt click into park, it would roll.... now i heard this is probably just a loose cable or whatever...well i just got home, pull into my garage, threw the car in park... and it was still in DRIVE... is this just a loose cable, having the same thing to do with as not being able to put it in park?... and can someone gimmy pretty detailed instructions on how to fix it.. or does it need to go to a tranny shop? any help is appreciated.
Sounds like the end of the cable down at the trans may have come apart. You're going to need to get under the car and have a look. The cable has a stud where it connects to the trans. This stud is held in by rubber (on the cable end), which will break down over time and let go of the stud. A new cable costs about $20 at an auto parts store and takes about an hour to replace.

I've seen the nut holding the linkage come off the manual shaft.
I’ve also seen the manual valve link come off the manual valve.
I would first crawl underneath, and visually check that the shifter is moving the shaft linkage on the side of the trannie. All the way forward is park.
If not you either have a broken cable or a bent cable retainer. You might pull the center console cover, and check that the cable is not moving and that it's securely mounted to the front of the shifter.
If the linkage is moving all the way forward, and all the way aft, but doesn’t change out of drive than you’ll need to drop the pan, and make sure the manual valve is moving forward or aft into the valve body as you move the linkage.
I've added a photo, to help explain. It's from a TH350, but it's basically the same deal as the 700R4.
Good Luck,
BTW: Mine did this to me a long time ago, and left me stuck in 2nd ten mile from home

ok i cant find where the plug plugs in... hrmm.. anyways.. yes its still connected at the shifter, and at the tranny where the lever moves for each gear i can shift with hand and there are no problems, so its in the cable somewhere thats the problem... ill keep looking, can i get some more help where that plug should go....
