car wont shift out of drive

last night i turned off my car while it was in OD. i then proceeded to shift from OD to P to keep the car in place. the shifter lever slid into P way to easily. i then found i could slide the gear shifter without pressing the button. i tried to start the car after that, to find that it did start, then lurched forward... it was still in the OD position. anyone have a similar problem that your shift lever wont go into gear? luckily its stuck in OD so i can move the car, and weirdly, it still starts even though its not in N or P. by the way, my car is a 1984 Camaro Z28 with the LG4 engine and a 700R4 auto trans. thanks in advance

Sounds like you broke your shifter cable.Luckily you were home when it happened, mine broke in park at a gas station and I had to trust a guy to sit in the car and hold the brakes while I layed under it and moved the lever on the tranny

Broken or unhooked cable. Mine did it in 1st gear. The neutral safety switch is in the shifter, not the tranny. So, if the shifter is in N or P it will try to start--regardless of what gear the tranny is actually in.
