auto transmission slamming into gear

Anyone know if this is normal? Whenever I shift from any gear when at a stop to any other gear, the car SLAMS into gear, jolting either forward or backward depending on whether i shift into forward or reverse. Its not idleing high at all, under 600 RPMs when in gear, and around 800 when in park.

Is it a slam slam? Like comparing an import engaging in gear vs a thirdgen? Where the import you don't feel (heck with new cars you don't feel it either) whereas with a thirdgen you do feel it? I can tell you getting into gear on a thirdgen lets you know you've gotten into gear quite well as you will instantly feel it. I normally don't put mine into gear unless I'm well on the brake and even then you feel a good push when it does get into gear. Its enough power that even with the emergency brake pulled back hard, it'll still lurch forward/backward a few inches. If that's what you mean by slamming into gear, then its normal. If it BANGS like makes not an attempted lurch with the sound of metal on metal contact, then you may have something wrong, but normally auto camaros will give a good slam into gear. The best way is to compare to another camaro and guage it then. My 700r4 shifts and gets into gear noticibly harder than my friend's 700r4 which in compariosn is rather quite tame and soft, where mine will seem like it mashes.

No metal on metal sound at all. I just have to make sure I have the brake pushed down pretty good or else it'll buck forward or backward....but even if the brakes are on, I still really feel it. I've never driven another 3rd gen, but it sounds as if its normal from what you've said. Just wanted to make sure nothing was wrong and that it was normal.

I busted my tranny mount a few weeks ago, didn't affect shifting though rather when you pushed the engine the car would rock like it had some 1000 horses under the hood. As for hard shifts into D/R I have a corvette servo in mine, pushes the shifts to be firmer and getting into gear quite hard. My friend with his 700r4 is pure stock and I swear that thing is really feather like in shifts and when you get it in gear. A shift kit will affect all shifts not just getting into gear. So you know when you get into 1st 2nd 3rd 4th. With some setups, a shift kit causes chips up to 3rd shift.
