Raised eyebrows anyone?

Anyone ever think of building a 2 speed rearend? maybe with a lower secondary gear for draggin and keep the primary for street use or even a higher secondary for "flyin" and keepin the primary. Seems like the only thing with 2 speed's were the big trucks but i just wanted to bounce this offa you's guys's heads lol

Probably hasn't been done because of size, weight, complexity, and idiot passenger car drivers. Sure was neat on the old farm truck, though.

Alternative: Gear Vendor. Except it goes behind the tranny, not in the diff. Would require major modification to the tunnel and torque arm setup, though.

GrearVendors makes an under/overdrive unit that replaces the tailshaft of almost any tranny. It is basically a two speed auto.

They make both stand-alone units that use a short shaft, or bolt-on like you said. Even the bolt-on would hit the tunnel, require mods to the crossmember/driveshaft/torque arm, etc. Some full-frame passenger cars can handle it, but not our unibody.

It's hardly an automatic, though. You have to shift it using an electrical switch.

WRONG!:nono: it is an automatic, just an electronically controlled one. i have a 1990 454ss pickup. i have a gear vendors unit in it. i fickin love the thing. i wouldn't trade it for the world. here's how it is though. you can set your shift points. under half throttle, it shifts at 3500. anywhere from half to WOT it shifts at 5200. it works off of your TPS. when i put it on, i knocked 4 tenths off of my ET. i just keeps my motor in the power band. but the best part is when somebody thinks that they just got blown away by six-speed pickup!

whoops, forgot this. it can be shifted manually by a foot switch.

Uncle. I've only been around RV's and classic muscle cars that have had them (non-computerized). Didn't know they had a kit to hook it to the computer.

The other possibility would to hae a Ford 9" rear end modified to fit under you car, then all you have to do is change out the third member for the gear ratio you want to run with.

at a place I used to work at, a couple of mechanics were talking about an old chrysler in the 50s that had a "columbia 2 speed rear end"

He said it would take of like a bat out of hell and cruise on the highway.
