I just Purchased an 89 z28 and it is in need of a tranny. I am looking at a TH700-R4 on a bored 305 EFI engine. I was reading a tech article in one of my Chevy mags that unfortunately showed that the 305 want suited to the 700-R4 in the respect that its shift point was way too high and the 305 took too long to get to the nessacary RPM. BLAH BLAH....

The engine is a bored over 3 305. I am looking for advice on a suitable automatic tranny that can function with the car at street and track. High Performance.

 

Shift points can be overridden or adjusted. Do you mean that there is too great a jump between 1st & 2nd gear ratios. That is a common complaint on the 700R4. With a strong motor it doesn't add up to a hill of beans on the street, a drag only car is a different story.

 

Im trying to make it a solid street runner that can hold its own on the track. The distance between 1st and second gears is partly what im afraid of. But its the overall picture also. Im just afraid that theres another type of tranny that would better suit my performance needs.

 

The 700 is fine for most cars that are anywhere near stock. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over running one. Lots of people run them, in these cars, 4th gens F cars, Vettes, trucks, etc.

Boring a 305 motor .030" doesn't make much difference in that regard.

We just moved here from So Cal, we were looking at a house in West Chester among others, bought one in Loveland instead.
