Is there any way to change the gear ratio's in a 700r4? i would like to narrow the gap between 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear, and plus i would like to make the overdrive gear like my 3rd. I would like to have 4 power gears.... is this impossible?

You could always go with a TH400 and (I'm having a brain fart right now as I can't remember the name) that addon overdrive unit that basically double the number of gears you've got. It replaces the tailshaft (IIRC) (Vendors Overdrive?) and gives you 1/2 speeds between your...

Just an idea if you've got money to burn.

new gear ratios
why????
your shortening your gear spread and lowering your overall ratio. it makes no sense. unless your racing a very low torque high rpm engine. get a t5 or tremec 5 speed there is one additional ratio between first and 4th

I have heard of people with th400s in 3rd gens I believe. I was told that the 700r4 is about as big as the th400s. Does anyone have any more concrete info?

One of the guys on the Thirdgen digest has done it, that's why I mentioned it. If you go to f-body.org and rummage through the last couple of weeks of thirdgen lists you'll find the post where he talks about it AND the fact that he installed it himself.

They are and can be built to be tons stronger than the 700r4, and have better ratio spacing. The main disadvantage to one is that they do not have overdrive. Scauffiel was refering to the gear vendors gear splitter I believe. It makes your car act like a six speed auto, but I have heard that that will not fit in a thirdgen.

I've got a TH400 in mine and a few other people also do. The problem that they're talking about is the addon Venders Overdrive I guess it's pretty large.

It's possible to go with TH350 parts, which would give a 2.52 first, 1.52 2nd, and 1.00 3rd & .70 4th, but you'd like the ratios of a 200-4R a lot better, and if it's built right, will be a great trans.

the question was asked just for common knowledge. I was just wanting to know if it could be done. I know that there are better options out there, i just always wondered.
