how much stall is everyone using?
I was wondering how much stall everyone is using. What kind and what is it rated for.
Im thinking of getting www.ptcrace.com to fix me a 3000 stall.
They do good work and he said I could get one for $250 bucks.
They stand behind there product, and also do repair work on all name brands.
Is 3000 stall too much for a 350 TPI with aftermarket heads, cam, headers, and a 3.73 gear?
thanks for any info.

I've got two right now, and I'm trying to decide which I'm going to run....
TCI StreetFighter ~3000 700R4 w/ lockup.
Torco Custom Built 3200 700R4 w/ lockup.

For a stock cam and heads TPI, 3000 is too much stall. Somewhere between 2000-2400 would be better suited. I tried a 2800 stall last year and while I got some great 60 ft's my et stayed the same and I lost some mph.
I went back to my stock convertor after that but I too am thinking about moving up to at least the 2025 "vette" convertor.

Yeah, 3000 is definitely too much stall for a stock heads and cam car. I only run 1.8s on street tires, and didn't lose any mph when i put my vigilante on, and i am stalling 3k+ as verified on a scan tool.
Of course results may vary, the old adage you get what you pay for is very true. I wouldn't touch a $250 3k stall converter with a 10 foot pole unless you know a few people with fast cars running them. If low budget is your game, the S10 converter can't be beat, and is under $200. If you're trying to get out of the hole in a hurry though, you can't go wrong with a yank or vig in a 700r4.

Stall speed depends on how much torque goes into the converter. Just because the rated speed is 3000 doesn't mean thats what your car is going to stall it at. Since TPI is maxed out between 5000-5500 , it may only stall the converter at 2700. As a general rule though, the 3000 converter is probably going to be too much. The best thing to do is call the manufacturer. Once they have all the info on your car and how you intend on driving it, they will suggest the best stall speed for the car.
My 8" race converter is rated at 5700. My engine and the altitude I race at I can only get it to stall at 5000 on the transbrake (only way to find the true stall speed)

well, I will be changing heads, Proably go with AFR's, trickflows, or dart. Also I will be going to a bigger cam, something with .500 to .550 lift. PTC makes a great convert, I know of a few guys that run strickly track cars, and have good luck out of them.
For instance, 72 nova, 388 with 650 hp, 2 speed powerglide, 5.56 gears, 12' slicks, and 4-link. Hes is running 6.48 in an 1/8. And he has 1.3 60-ft times. It pulls the wheels about 3 ft high on take off.
I just dont want to buy twice. So would a 2500 stall be ok, or should I go for a 3000 stall with the heads, and cam?

It wont hurt you to run the high stall with the TPI as long as you can adequately cool the trans (aftermarket cooler is in order). Your car might not run as great at the track as a stock TPI for now, but I'd say go for the 3000 if you're planning on doing the modifications soon.
