Auto to T56 swap?s
Auto to T56 swap?s
Well since my 700R4 is nearly to the point of complete and total death, it will soon be history, and the L03 will goin' with it. In its place will sit an LS1 and T56. I have read that there are some differances between the LS1 T56 and the LT1 unit. All of the swap articles deal with the LT1 trans. So hear are my questions? What parts can I use from a T5 3rd gen ( like pedals, etc. ) , can I use Spohns 93-97 T56 crossmember to install it? One other thing, I saw a company that advertises a 3-4 steel fork as an upgrade, why is it needed. I already know about the wimpy clutches so I plan on upgrading.

RSRagtop,
My Brother (I know this whole " my brother has done this and my brother has done that answer I keep giving is gettin' old, but he had the money to spend before I did, so I payed attention and learned from his mistakes and triumphs as he built his car) has done the LS1/T56 conversion in his 87 IROC and the tranny's are physically pretty much the same on the outside. There are very subtle differences, but they don't come int play. The LT1 and the LS1 T56's have the same physical dim's but, I would plan on using all LS1 hardware and accesories. On a side note, unless you are planning on building the LS1 you put in your car, the stock clutch will be ok, the problem you'll have is keeping the fire out on your rear tires.
My bro's car will just fry his 315 (yes that's 315) GoodYear's if he leans on it from say 10 MPH in 2nd gear.

, 405hp should be about enough. The Z06 Vettes used a beefed up clutch and I've read that just adding sticky tires to a stock LS1 car is enough to make the clutch slip like crazy. One more question, what are the differances in the hydralics between the T5, LT1 T56, and LS1 T56? Can the resevoir, slave cylinder and other components be interchanged? I would love to have a wrecked LS1/ T56 4th gen appear out of nowhere at exacltly the right time, but I'll probably end up buying a motor from an online company, I would like to know what I can scrounge from 3rd gens since there are practically no 4th gens in junkyards around here.

It'll all swap out. The LT-1 and LS-1 are both GM small blocks all the tranny stuff will swap nicely, I wouldn't worry about the LT-1 stuff not going with the LS-1 stuff because hey, technically a LS1 and T56 don't go into a thirdgen right? (I can't believe I just said that). So many people told me it wouldn't work, "you'll never get it done," they said. F u c k em.
Hope ya got some dough in your pockets though.

lt1 and ls1 are both small block, 2 different generations of small blocks. totally different. the tranny bellhousing bolt patterns on the two motors are different. the ls1 clutch is a different type of clutch so you would need the ls1 tranny, hydraulics, and clutch.

An LS1 tranny will work if:
1. You change the input shaft to a LT1 shaft
2. You use an LT1 bellhousing, clutch fork, and pp&clutch setup
The LS1 doesn't have a clutch fork, it has a hydraulic "fork" built into the T.O. bearing. Very troublesome I hear....
Also the bellhousing bolt pattern isn't the same, and the input shaft has the wrong spline/length....
soooo... Use an LT1 tranny...

Ooops, forgot the main meat of the message reading through it. Yes, if you are putting an LS1 motor in use the LS1 tranny. Any other motor, use the LT1 tranny... Whew

So an LS1 bellhousing will bolt up to the L98, a LT1 bellhousing will bolt up to an L98, but they're COMPLETELY different?
Hmmmmmm.....

But it's a complete waste of time to try & put an LT1 T56 behind an LS1 or vice versa, when both versions are plentiful.

CRAP, I forgot to add this little tidbit. Ther used to be a place called KMK Camaro/Trans Am salvag in Texas (think in DFW area). I got my 88 ground effects there a few years back, don't know if they're still around though.
