new gear install on 10 bolt

i have a 10 bolt 3.23 posi in my T/A. I've been having problems with the pinion and pinion bearings so I'm gonna order a new Richmond ring and pinion gears from Summit. I know how to take the rear apart and put everything in, I'm just concerned with the shims and how to make sure everything is perfectly set before i tighten it down, and how tight should everything be torqued?

well heavy that sounds good but it doesn't really work like that in real life. you can swap carrier shims around all you want, mix and match. what you can't do is change the total measurement of the shims and you have to get the correct back lash, something that may not happen if you put the shims back where thay came from. how many gear sets you ever installed? and how many are still on the road? i'm willing to bet that most people that do install gear sets do it by guessing at what thye're doing and not actually measuering or checking anything since it requires tools most people don't have.

yeah heavy if you swap a carrier and not the gears there's a damn good chance you can do that and everything will work out just fine. still it's really good idea to check back lash abd the contact pattern when you swap carreirs

ok, thanks for the post and i think i know now why I'm changing my gears again when i just did it two months ago. I watched and helped out the mechanic (a friend of mine) and I think he just put the shims back where they were. We didn't replace the gears last time, just the carrier bearings, and pinion bearings. How do you know the measurement and where to put the shims and how do you acurately calculate the correct back lash? sorry if this is a stupid question.

Ifyou REALLY want to know how to do this, get a service manual, and read, read, read.
If you REALLY want to do it, buy the setup guages and a dial indicator and have at it.

To give an adequate explaination or instruction here on the board would be very difficult.

This is a decent article for doing rear gears. http://www.sethirdgen.org/10bolt1.htm

I usually just reuse the shim on the pinion (I have never needed to change one)and check it with marking grease to make sure my pattern is running in the center of the ring gear and shim the ring gear using a dial indicator that I bought at http://www.harborfreight.com and I have not ripped any gears out of my vehicles.

the pinion depth is etched o nthe back of the pinion and the back lash is etched on the edge of the ring gear, nothing to cacluate at all. buy a manual and read the part about setting up rear gear set then go buy all the tools to do it with or find someone to do it for you.

You could give Summit Racing 800-230-3030 a call, too. They sell a video by Richmond on how to install gears... I think it's $20. But I agree, get a manual.. http://www.helminc.com
