Help ID rear, please.

The rear on my 82 Z has the code 3JH. The Haynes book doesn't show that combo for any 82 or any other 3 gen rear. It's deinitely 3 J H

take the cover off and look. Do you have any idea how many people have posted sob stories about "I bought this or that for my rear and it doesn't fit even though it's the right code"? Other than curiosity about what the factory put in the car, it's not reliable enough to use for anything.

Have you changed the fluid lately? If not, then it needs it. You have to take the cover off to do that, so go change the fluid, and identify what's actually in there instead of fiddling around with a bunch of codes that have a good probability of being wrong anyway.

You make very good points. Before I, or anyone lays out a plug nickel for parts, they have to do their homework, even if it is dirty. Sans having a lift to work under, removing the plate requires "Grease Monkey" work of the first degree. I just recently picked up this car. So far I found the engine is from an 87, The rear is from points unknown, according to Haynes and between the two is a tired TH350 which will reqiure much TLC. I was just curious as to where the casing originally called home.
BTW, do you have any thoughts about those "drive on tilt lifts" I think the cards have determined that I will be spending mucho time under this puppy.

well, if the torque arm bolts to it, it came from one of these cars. No other chassis uses the same system. Beyond that, it's anybody's guess. The codes might tell you what gear that housing started out its life with and whether it origianlly came with a posi, but it won't tell you much about the car it came in.

I very seriously doubt your car has a T-350; 82 cars came with a T-200. It's also a 3-speed but altogether inferior to the 350 unfortunately. No 350s were ever made with the provision for the torque arm, so it takes some specialty work to get one into one of these. Take a look at your trans pan, if it says "metric" it's a 200.

Traany ID'd

I used the Trans ID page from http://www.nastyz28.com/transid.html to ID the tranny. According to the pan diagrams on the page, it could only be a TH350, or a THM200 or aTHM250. (After further review, I guess I'll have to get back under for a closer look. I'm hoping I don't find "metric" on it.)
Heres one for you, a previous owner swapped the stock 305 for 305 from an '87, go figure. My life would have been so much easier if he replaced the stock items with a Rehr /Morrisson engine, a Lenco and Moser rear. Heck, I wouldn't have minded if he back halved the car while he was at it. Too much to ask for, for a grand, I guess.

Mike,
Did you ever find out what these codes were? I also have 3JH and cannot find anything on it. I will take off the cover and look but I wonder why we can't find these codes anywhere.

its been a couple years, but i think "think", 3jh may have been a 3.08 open rear, gm 10 bolt, this was in the 84 camaro that donated its drivetrain, to my firebird, i did not swap axles, since i had a 3.23 rear originally,

when i looked up that axle code i had to go to the gm dealer, they told me exactly what it was., if you be nice at the parts desk you can get help. just don't try and get any help, after 4pm when the get off at 5, they just wanna go home then and don't care about anything else
