METAL speedo drive gear???

Heya, I've got a 91 Z28 that was originally a 5 speed that someone converted to a 700r4 (of unknown origin). The speedo doesn't work properly so i did some research and got a 4000 pulse VSS and ordered new gears for my 3.42 rear. But today when i went to install the drive gear i found that the ouput shaft has a METAL gear on it! It has 40 teeth that run parallel with the the shaft. And it doesn't appear to have a clip at all. It's pressed on somehow.

What are my options? If i pry the metal gear off (assuming i can) could i just put the new plastic one in and order a clip for it? If so could i even just rig a cotter pin to hold it in place? Not sure what would work..

thanks much!!

I think the metal gear runs with a metal drum which uses an electromagnetic spedo sensor, not a mechanical one? I purchased a new tranny and it came with something like what you mentioned. I pulled the metal gear & drum off and put the plastic gear on and the tail housing offf my old tranny.

OIC, i didn't have anything resembling a metal drum when i got the car, but it did have the electromagnetic sensor in it. How did you go about getting the metal gear off? I was thinking of using a slide hammer with a really long extension but that would probably wreck the transmission.. And after you got it off, was the hole in the right place for the plastic gears to line up?

Anyone have an idea of how to get the pressed metal gear off without harming the trans? Can i just hammer it off with the trans still in the car without wrecking anything?

thanks!

Yeah, just hammer or press it off. Lots of 4-speeds used to come that way, especially Muncies.
