OK Axle decoders, I've got one for you.

1982 Pontiac Trans Am
Originaly equiped with 305 CFI & TH-200C.

10 Bolts on the cover, with the code (3JX C172 2) on the axle.

I know the 'C172 2' is production date & time.

I found '2JX' or 'JX' being a 2.93 posi, but nothing showing '3JX'...

Thanks,

Ron

if you take that number to the parts department at the local GM dealer, they will be able to tell you what it was originally.

but someone is bound to chime in and say "if you haven't changed the fluid lately then it needs to be done, so pull the cover off and start counting teeth, its the only way to be 100% sure"

and EDE will be right when he says this, but i beat him to it this time

Is there a metal plug in the rear cover? What does the RPO list say it's supposed to have?

Theres no plug, but theres a tag off one of the bolts saying something about use limited diff oil or something. It's hard reading the tag, since it's on backwards.

I don't have the RPO list since the car has been striped down.
I looked through a bunch of part but couldn't find any list.

Ron,
Did you ever find out about that code? I have one very similiar
3jh c189 2 and can't find anything on it. I do plan on taking the rear cover off to verify my gears.

This maybe a month to late, but It did turn out to be a 2.93 Posi. I don't know what maker, but it had a cone type posi, so that might have something to do with the number 3 ???

Sorry 'crazynights' about the extended delay.
