T5 Trans - first gear syncro popping out...
I'm looking into swapping out my auto trans to a manual trans. I found this one good deal but he said the syncro for the first gear keeps popping out or osmething like that. How hard is it to fix this problem? and is it gonna be expensive? thanks.
never did a t5, but on the older speeds it isn't that hard to do, you need bearing seperators and a press. the parts are real cheap for the amount of work involved. buy a good manual with pics to get an idea how deep into the trans you have to go.

I have my NWC T5 apart right now. I lost the front cluster bearings and it destroyed the cluster and sent metal chips through the entire trans. Thankfully all it did was score the other bearings and didn't hurt any gears other than the cluster. I just got my master rebuild kit in from hanlon today. I must say I'm impressed with it. It's very complete for $139. I bought the new cluster at drivetrain.com for $150. $40 cheaper than hanlon. The first gear problem could be as simple as your syncro keys and spings need replacing along with the shifter pads. If the keys are broken it will pop out of gear. If the pads are worn or missing it won't go all the way into gear, and pop out of gear. Could also be a broken or bent shifter fork. Hopefully that is all it is. When it pops out of gear it can put a bad wear pattern on the gear and slider. Eventually it will not stay in gear not matter what you do. You have no choice but to replace the parts then. If your first gear is shot, they are $90.23. The 1-2-reverse slider is $85. Both from hanlon. So if first gear is bad, you will have $314 in it plus labor. (kit-gear-slider) Any way you go with this trans, you will have to completely disassemble the trans to repair this problem. And, buy the video from hanlon if you do this. It's only $16.95 and worth it's weight in gold.-Dan
