did i blow my transmission??? details inside

I was driving from school to auto tech this afternoon, and i was going about 15 mph in 2nd gear, and i floored it to go around someone and it downshifted into 1st and heard a LOUD bang.. like i hit a huge hole in the road.. and my car stopped accelerating.. It was just like when my tranny slips going into 3rd.. the engine just revs. so i let off the gas, and it shifted just fine into 3rd, and then i slowed down, because someoen was turning in front of me, and i gave it gas again to accelerate, and it would shift and slip, i let off and give it gas again,, and it would shift, and then slip.. SO i barley touched the gas, and got it to stay in gear, and i turned into a parking lot and put it in park.. i turned off the car and checked underneith to make sure everything was in one piece, and then checked the fluid. it looked like it always did, and didn't smell burnt. So i got back in, started it up, put it in gear and it did NOTHING..... 1,2,D,OD didnt work, but reverse was just fine. Why is it that i was able to drive it into the parking lot just fine but once i turned it off it wont go back into gear???

So the parking lot i turned into just happend to be the one for my Auto Tech class that i was going to (how lucky is that). so i go inside and ask my instructor, and i told him what it was doing and he said it sounded like it was the clutches.

So here are all the symptoms: works fine in reverse, does nothing in OD... but in D and 2 it will sometimes make a whinning/crying/whirrling sound coming from the transmission, but the car wouldn't move. but when i put it in first. i hear it sound like it engaged but it wouldn't move..

EDIT: it also whines when in park... not just drive.. its more of a sort of SLOW groaning sound.. could it maybe be the T.Q. or something. can i hook up a guage to it to see if the pressure is low??

Sounds like you broke your sunshell. Looks like you need a good rebuild. Talk to Dana at probuilt automatics 18007763220 (i think) and he could give you the exact info on this.

Yea, sounds like you broke a mechanical part.
The symptoms you mentioned are like burnt clutches, but they normaly don't whine in park - plus you would have smelled burnt clutches when you checked the oil & NORMALLY they give you a little pre advanced warning.

Its been slipping going into 3rd at high throttle for a while now.

And one thing that i found was weird. but maybe it is normal for a tanny to do. is when i floored it, the engine rpms shot up BEFORE it shifted.. and it always does this, (when downshifit).. so it was like it reved up a little and then jumped into 1st and BOOM!!

but im not gonna rebuild cause im gonna get a T-56

Thats one thing that it is not. A broken Reaction Sun Shell will cause a loss of 2nd, 4th, and Reverse. It will still pull in 1st gear, and eventually skip second and go into 3rd.

I was going to say that the foward sprag is busted, but putting it into D,2,or 1, would apply the overrun clutches and bypass the sprag, unless those are toast or damaged too. If it was the Torque converter, it would not move in revese as well, not to mention that I never seen a TC make a car not move. I have seen them make the car a dog, but never not move. Sounds like it will have to come out for damage assesment.

Not a 3rd gen but I noticed some symptoms in my 98 Blazer, there's about a 1 second (maybe less) delay from when I punch it to when it actually goes, and every so often if I'm really laying down the accellerator it will slip into 3rd gear from 4th, then I have to let off the gas and start accellerating again.

well since im gonna go with the T-56.. how much do yall think i can get for my junked 700r4?? i was told around $50.. just wondering if i should try to sell it or if i should just donate it to a worthy cause?

I have seen a TC make a car not move. The whole insides of the TC were shreaded to little bits. The car would rev but no movement. But this was on a 82 cadillac eldorado with a 5.7l diesel motor. 4L60Bliss thanks for the info I will use this for next time.
