guy ssays he has a muncie 44 in his car??

ok guys me and my dad went to look at a 81 firebird cause we wunt a project car and its a 400 witha 4 speed and the guy said that it has an aftermarket muncie in it and he said it was a 44, now i have never heard of anyt manual trans called a 44, but i don't know much. now do u think this car is worth it if we can get it for 1700? its got some work done and a 8.5 10-bolt with a new posi unit and 3.73 gears in it.it needs some body work and interior work to but its a project. now if say we wwunted to run a big block would this tranny hold up or no? wut if it turns out to be a t-10? are they any good? thanks guys

the muncie transmissions came in m20, m21, and the m22 rockcrusher. far as i know there ae no aftermarket muncies ,most are patterned off the t10. there is a dana44 rear end, have one in my truck (think it's a 44 14 bolt cover) and i ithnk that's what i had in my old jeep truck and what was an option on thirdgen f bodys and maybe factory on TTAs.
