Transmissions and Drivetrain Need help with your trans? Problems with your axle?

Does anybody have a tech article or link that really describes how a trans works?

I know there are a load of gears in there that must turn at a lower or higher speed but I want to know the tech stuff. How exactly does it work?

The theory is all the same but how it's applied varies with each transmission. In simplest terms hydraulic pressure is applied to bands or clutch packs to lock or release drums or hubs. Each combination either locks a drum, sun gear or planet carrier. Depending what is applied will give different gear ratios.

I doubt you could find a good page explaining exactly how they work. Buying a transmission repair manual will explain most of it.

You can start here on web pages

The Haynes GM Transmission Overhaul manual, sold at places like Pep Boys and Autozone next to the regular haynes books, has a chapter on transmission operation. You can also find them at http://www.haynes.com , and I think JCWhitney used to sell them... not sure if they do anymore.
