I just recieved a 700r for free. 2nd gear went in it or something.

Do I dare attempt to rebuild it myself with new (stronger) parts or trust it to one of those transmission shops?

how difficult are auto's to rebuild?

any good books out that I can buy?

 

I think rebuilding transmissions is out of the scope of most home mechanics. I would try and find a good trans shop to rebuild it. I'm almost done swapping a th350 into my 82 z28.

 

Well if you're good with engines and mechanical stuff there is no reason you shouldn't be willing to attempt it yourself. Hell your getting it for free and you already have one in your car so you have nothing to lose, if you screw it up you have one you can put back in.

Check out Ebay and you can probably find a manual for it. Also check the back of a few magazines and you'll probably find a few places selling videos on rebuilding the 700R4 I got a set of videos from Arden productions thats like 3+ hours long and pretty much goes through a complete disassembly and reassembly as well as differances between differant years.
