quick rear axle question

i know i have the 7.5 in. 10 bolt, but is it the 27 spline? I have the stock axle and carrier. Is it a 2 series carrier? Thanks.

If it's the stock 86 rear, and it's a 10-bolt, you have 26-spline axles and a 2 series carrier.

Your axles have 26 splines.

I think it was 88 1/2 up had 28 spline axles.

oh, well would a 27 spline one fit? I found the 3.42 gears i wanted on Summit, and it's for the 27 spline 10 bolt 7.5 in. Is there a better place to but them? They're like $195. It's the Richmond gears...

I think Summit was referring to the spline count on the pinion gear and yoke.
The only thing to worry about when buying gears, is that you have the proper series gears for your current series carrier.

So make sure you get a set of 3.42 Series 2 gears. I bought a set of Richmond 3.42 series 2 gears a couple of weeks ago myself, through Summit

I would strongly recommend against buying the special 3 series gears for 2 series carriers... while they work fine, nothing wrong with that, you're definitely hosed if you ever want to upgrade your posi for example. You have to get a 2 series one.

Use regular gears and a ring gear spacer. It costs a little more but may save you big $$$$ in the future.

If you need to get gears and a posi, then you should consider getting the gears and Torsen limited slip from SLP. SLP sells GM gears, which IMHO are the best gears out there. Then you will have a limited slip for $99 and it will be a 3-series carrier.

You can get a 2 series posi(like an auburn for example) if you need to--and for the exact same price. Jegs has it for 314 dollars. If you are considering getting a posi, wait and do it all at once. If you think you have traction problems with your current gears, it will be much worse with deeper gears. Another option is 2 series gears and a powertrax locker(the series doesn't matter with the powertrax.

I'm personally going with a 2 series Auburn Pro...

There's no real advantage between the two, but theres a few more 3 series manufactures out there. On the other hand you can go as low as 2.73 & 3.08 with 2 series, and as high as any 3 series carrier. So maybe the 2 series technically has more flexibility?

actually 82 Camaro, i can't spin my rear tires. I can't even brakestand. My tranny is pretty messed up. Hopefully that and my engine will be rebuilt by the end of summer. It sucks not being able to burn out. And it sucks being 90 mins away from your car. So i'm still not sure if i got everything. The 2 series carrier will let me get lower gears, and the 3 series will let me get bigger gears? As for the posi, yeah i'm going to get both done at the same time. I'm not sure what to get though. That SLP posi and GM gears sounds good. Is that at the SLP website? Thanks guys. Oh yeah, what is the best way to rebuild my tranny. I want to get a corvette servo .500 valve and everything, but is there anything else. And the TransGo shift kit. Thanks.

Not true with Richmond gears. Believe it or not, you've got more choices with a 2 series carrier.

Ratio Teeth Part No. Carrier
2.73 41-15 49-0048-1 2
3.08 40-13 49-0001-1 2
3.23 42-13 49-0044-1 3
3.23 42-13 49-0003-1 2
3.42 41-12 49-0045-1 3
3.42 41-12 49-0005-1 2
3.73 41-11 49-0046-1 3
3.73 41-11 49-0007-1 2
4.10 41-10 69-0322-1 3
4.10 41-10 49-0009-1 2
4.56 41-9 69-0324-1 3*
4.56 41-9 69-0326-1 2*
