Stock 700-r4 punishment

A buddy of mine's having a 383 Stroker built for his '86 Trans Am, which originally has a carbuerated 305. However, he's gonna drop it into the car when it's finished, backed by a 700-r4 with over 100,000 miles on it and the stock 2.73 gears. Needless to say, stuff's gonna break. His explanation of "why" makes sense though, as it all would need replaced anyways sooner or later, and he doesn't want the engine to just set around. The 383 is going to be pretty bad, or at least compared to mine and all of my friends' cars (stock 3.8Ls, a 350 TPI and LT1s). My question is, would he be better off just waiting? And if he doesn't, what could possibly go wrong?

i dont really think the rear will be a problem. ive seen stock 10 bolts in the 12's. the trans will last depending on how he drives it, but most likely it will go in the near future. if it was me, i would put in the 383 and drive it as long as i could with the stock 700-r4, though i would definately get some higher gears than 2.73.

Yeah I agree, because if I'd spent that much on an engine I wouldn't want it setting around either. He's not really rough on vehicles, but he'd raw-dawg this one, which makes me think he'd burn the clutches up in no time.

The guy at the place where I just had my 700 R4 rebuilt said that the trans is only good up to about 350 HP. I'm sure there are some guys here that have first hand info on that though.

On of my buddies has a 383 stroker in his car and he was baggin on the new engine and when the car went to shift the transmission bit the dust big time. The transmission actually hit the bottom of the car leaving a big dent.

A friend of mine bolted his 383 to a stock 700R-4 until the 3-4 clutches finally let go like a year later, but it probably would have done that regardless of what engine.
