Strength of a 4th gen 1LE LSD vs 3rd gens
Strength of a 4th gen 1LE LSD vs 3rd gens
hi everyone. Not a regular here but anyway heres my situation. Last year my 3.23 LSD bearings and seals were gone so I got all the differential bearings and seals replaced (at a pretty hefty cost). It fixed the noises and it runs smooth except since mid summer my LSD is only spinning 1 tire
.... So a rebuild kit for the clutches that will supposedly fix my problem is 100+ and I dont feel like paying someone else alot of coin to do it again but I dont really want to do it myself either. Im thinking of swapping in a 94 4th gen 1LE with 3.42s. If it doesnt appear to be worth it I will just rebuild it myself and hope it works out. If someone has answers to any or all of these Qs it would be great!
1. how much stronger will this unit be than a 3rd gens?
2. Is the 1LE rearend stronger than one from a Z28 or a trans am?
3. Any other differences in the 1LE rear vs normal LSD other than the 12 inch discs (oh boy am I ever going to need a proportioning valve, 11s in the front and 12s in the back! lol)?
Thanks
greg

1. LSD's come in several flavors
-Auburn
-Zexel Torsen
The Zexel Torsen units come in two flavors
"Regular" and "HD"
The HD units showed up on some SLP prepared cars as an option
Sooo... you would want to check torque ratings of what you
have against these three choices....
2. The rear end housings, third and fourth gen, are pretty
much the same after the switch to 28 spline axles...
(Other than the fourth gen has about a 1.5 inch greater
width) I am unaware of what 1LE means in terms of the rear end
