Clutch release problems on T5 with pre 86 350

I have just fitted a rebuilt 1977 350 to a 1991 T5 trans. A new flywheel, clutch assembly and pilot bush was used. Now I cannot get it into reverse (or any gear). The usual teeth grating takes place when this is attempted.
When one of the rear wheels is raised and rotated (not got posi) with the trans in 5th gear, the wheel can be rotated with the clutch down, with a noise that sounds like the cover plate “fingers” touching the drive plate. When the clutch is slowly brought up, this noise disappears and the clutch can be felt to bite. This noise is definitely coming from the bellhousing area. At no time in the clutch travel can reverse gear be selected. We first thought that the input shaft was binding on the pilot bush, but since the wheel turned quite easily, the input shaft must have been rotating within this bush with the clutch clear. Thoughts of corrosion on the flywheel/cover plate/friction plate have been thought of since the engine was installed about 2 months ago, with the gearbox not arriving until 6 weeks later. But, there is no strange rubbing/scraping sounds when the rear wheel is turned and the clutch brought up. Just the normal rubbing sound The clutch fork is moving about 16mm. Enough to clear (as proved by the test above anyway).

Any thoughts on this?

Is there an issue with the early 2 piece cranks and a T5? Are there any clearence problems?

Thanks.
Andy.
