Trans not working.....much

So i go haulin' out of the gas station today, stop at the four way, take off, pass three people on the way out of town, and about halfway around a truck i realize i'm still in second. Thats as high as i go now...

It's all stock 700r4 except for a B&M shift improver kit and a transcooler.
I melted a trans line the other day on the header and leaked about a quart out, trailered it home, fixed the line, everything ran fine. TV cable snapped twice but I didn't put more than a block on it either time.

If i have to get this trans rebuilt, should i get it done professionally or should i just go grab a manual and do it myself? I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but haven't done anything with transmissions. If i need to get it rebuilt, who makes the best street/strip rebuild kits?

Thanks...

The auto trans is very intimidating and unless you have worked on them before I would leave it to a professional, but you have a lot of options depending on your price range. you can have your tranny rebuilt $1200 to $1600 (don't flame me if wrong) you can buy a B&M transkit and have a shop rebuild with that kit. Transkit for 700R4 is approx $350, labor cost ???. You can buy a B&M, Jet, hughes tranny already done for $1700-$2100??. A transmission shop usually gets about $350-400 for installation. Hope this helps.

there has to be a cheaper alternative besides yanking one out of the yard. Transmissions don't look that complicated, in one side, out the other, a few planetaries and clutch packs in the middle, a few servos on the outside and a valve body....am i completely wrong? have you rebuilt one? is it really that hard?

You get what you pay for. However, I wouldn't touch one without experience.

My 700r4 went last week. Auto shop got a low mileage 700r4 from a junkyard ($280) & put it in. 3 days later, I'm back on the road with a grand total of just under $600 (parts + labor). Hasn't fallen out yet Advance Auto (apparently, they sell transmissions too...) quoted me a price of $899 new & $175 core. Another junkyard quoted me a price of $450 used, so I guess I got lucky.

P.S. If you were wondering, I got the work done at Speedy Auto & they did a pretty good job. I'd recommend taking it to a trans specialty shop, but if you need it done cheap & quick, this is the way to go.

Well, i think i'm gonna rebuild it, i got a 700r4 from a friend, and bought an iroc for $150, i'm gonna pull the engine trans and rear from the iroc, put the trans and rear in my car (3.42 posi), and rebuild my old trans with parts from the friend's so i got an extra next time i drop it...i think i'll run the iroc at the track with a big block and a powerglide in it(i got lots of free time and lots of free parts). It'll give me something fun to do.
