VERY basic 700r4 questions

Bear with me, I have some very basic 700r4 questions. First some background: my 700r4 in my 1990 Firebird Formula went out & I got it replaced with a 700r4 from a 93 Camaro with 61,000 miles. I had the mechanic save the old trans for me.

First of all: How big & heavy is the old transmission? Will I need a truck to get it home?

Second: Mechanic says my front planetary gears are shot. I have no transmission experience. Can I rebuild this for experience? Or would someone want to buy it in its current condition to rebuild?

Third: 93 Camaro transmission in a 90 Formula. Is this a good idea? Can it even be done correctly?

And finally: My old trans shifted fairly hard, felt almost like a manual. My new trans shifts very soft. Is this bad? If so what should I do about it?

Sorry for the dumb questions. I've already searched the boards and haven't found much about these particular questions. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated

well lets see you should be able to get it home in your car but id be very careful cause fluid will come out of the of the back of it so id put some trash bags down on the carpet put a rag in the back tailhousing, and the dipstick tube and try to wedge it so it isnt movin around
the 93 should work just fine in your formula
and maybe you mught wanna fiddle around with the old one get a manual and familiarize your self with the parts and what they do but i wouldent try to rebuild by myself id try to get someone with experience to help me rebuild and if noone will help then hell ill sell it.
as for the shifting difference id say that the old tranny probably had some work done to it and the new one is probably stock!
just my nickels worth!

Hey, the 93 is a 4l60 E, its the electronic tranny, it won't work in your car unless you get a separate computer for the tranny thats about $1,000

If the 1993 is a 700R4 & not the 4L60E, then it should work out well. The 1993 700R4's are the best (and rarest) to start with, in stock form.

thanks for the advice guys. i specifically asked the mechanic to put a 700r4 in there, and he said that's what he did. he said he did have to change the tranny speedo gear to an electronic sender, but everything seems to be working now. i just need to get a shift kit in it. boy do i miss that quick shifting feeling....
