Axle Seal Leaking! Help!!??

Hey guys, the driver side seal is leaking in the axle and is putting gear oil all over in the inside of my wheel and before too long it might get on the rotor. It's an '89 IROC-Z (yes, borg-warner rear, that's why all the shops charge up the *** hole to repair it cause it has a "different design" than most rear ends.) So for me to do this myself, what exactly do I need to do? While I've got it apart, I might as well do the other seal too. What do two new seals cost say at Kragen or Pep boys? Oh, and I'll need new gear oil so I use like an 80 weight right? (And with that posi additive?) O.K. thanks for the very much needed help. -89IRO

you've been grossly misinformed about 9 bolts using a differant design than most other rear ends. there are basically only 2 types of rear ends as far as axle retention goes, either c clips or a bearing retaining flange. you either have to remove the rear cover and c clips to pull the axle or remove the brake drum/rotor and unbolt the retaining plate. doesn't matter which you have it's an easy job to do your self. if your seal is leaking it's because you need a new bearing so replace it too.

You don't have to pull the rear cover to replace the axle bearings and seals. Just remove the brake stuff and the 4 bolts on the axle retention flange, then the axle will slide out. Take off the old bearing and seal and have a shop install the new ones. Then re-assemble the axle.

Just a note on axle seals with the 9 bolt. Everyone I've done has used the SAME seals on both sides and of course it's the more expensive one.
