output shaft 'play' on T5 WC
output shaft 'play' on T5 WC
Hi Guys....so I changed the rear seal on my T5 with little difficulty. When I had the driveshaft out, I can easily move the output shaft side to side quite a bit..like an eighth of an inch! The output shaft spins nicely by hand and does not appear to be bent.
The tranny had new bearings put in about 6000 miles ago.
Is it normal for the output shaft to have 'play' like this???
I'm having a 'whine' sound coming from the driveline. It happens during 'float' or when I'm just curising at a steady speed - especially at 50mph and again at 85-95mph. The whine is getting a little louder as weeks pass. At first, I suspected my rear (9-bolt) but I'm now thinking that this play shouldn't be there.
As far as I remember, shimming was done on the counter shaft only so...do you guys think the rear bearing in the trans is shot?
Thanks for the help,
S

the best thing you can do is get a book and a mic ... I just rebuilt my t5 but i dont remember the clearance... that sounds like to much play.. sounds like it needs some shims.. Kevin

That is normal. There's basically nothing holding it in place when the diveshaft is not there. THe DS should fit tight in its bushing, and it in turn supports the back end of the mainshaft.
