700-r4 slow shift

When I shift from 1-2-3-OD manually, the 1-2 shift is immediate and pretty firm when I'm around 3k but the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are slow and delayed even when I shift closer to 4k. Is this a sign of a transmission going south or just normal? The transmission has never been rebuilt to my knowledge and the car has 120k on the odometer. TIA

It doesn't sound good. Try changing your filter & flushing the cooler lines. I've seen fresh fluid give new life to old transmissions. One quart of Lucas "Stop Slip" helped my ailing 700r4 alot, but it is only a temporary treatment. Kinda like putting a band aid on a bad cut.
BTW: My own 700 went out at about 120k & now 30k miles later I still haven't had a decent one yet.

ok your stupid formula because when he shifts it is 1-2-D(drive)-OD(over drive) when he shifts 1-2 its fine but when he goes from 2-3(D) the trans has its own shifting points so it will only shift when the motor gets that that rpm witch he is not at untill he waits (delayed time) same thing with 3-4

Rd, if you'll notice my original post, I said I would even wait to shift into D even close to redline. The trans shift point is well under redline but it's only at WOT or close that it delays. Does anyone know what conditions (RPM, speed, etc.) that the 700-r4 has to be at to shift?

my 86 t/a don't shift untill 4,500 to 4,700 (5,000 redline)so even when you shift around 4,000 it still has to go that extra 500 rpm, drive and over drive are the same thing excepte the 5th gear (witch you wouldn't even use in the 1/4 mile) the only 2 gears that are all by themselfs is 1 and 2, Drive and Over drive shift buy themsleves so your only shifting manually one time.

The tranny is probably not in the best shape for racing. If the WOT shifts are softer than the part throttle shifts the clutches probably arent holding as good as they should. Stay with me here. When the gas pedal is pressed the TV valve in the trans gets more and more compressed -in direct proportion to the gas pedal. The more the TV valve gets depressed the firmer and quicker the shifts are due to the increasing fluid pressure commanded by the TV valve. If the shifts are soft at WOT it sounds like the clutches are having a hard time holding a faster spinning engine. The fluid pressure might be there but the friction materia might be out to lunch.

So basically, baby it until I can get a rebuild? I knew it was gonna need one soon with 120k soft miles on it it's still due soon. I'd like to have enough saved to do a full performance rebuild.

So whats wrong with my tranny? From a standstill i can make my tires smoke, then the 1-2 shift will make the tires chirp, and then the 2-3 shift won't go till about 75mph and 6000rpm (digital dash only goes up to 6K), or it won't shift at all, need to let off the gas to let it shift. Any ideas, I already put in fresh fluid, filter, flushed the lines?
