Tranny problem?

I bought an 1985 iroc and it of course has the 4 speed auto with overdrive in it.

the problem is, while giving it alot of gas and alot of times just starting off slow, it will go up to 3 rpm usually and shift (into second and third gear.) I'm losing massive amounts of speed cause of it and its hard on the 355 reving that high than shifting. It also makes a rattling noise before it shifts, could I get some possibilites of the problem or what to check. I fill it up with tranny fliud frequently too and even after its full it still does the same.

Thanks

ive rode in the car and it will feel like it goes to nuetral for a second than itll kick into gear hard. first gear wont shift any higher than 3000 rpms when i rode in it either, i am used to a th 350 and have recomended him to buy one and put one in his car but he likes the fuel economy and the performance of the 700r4,
thanks everyone for helping a fellow Camaro owner and one of my good friends out.

Try this and see if it helps.

Yes Leo's method.

Have some one sit in your car "engine off" and floor it, while its floored press the detent tab and slide the cable toward the firewall as much as possible, wiggle the throttle linkage to make sure it's not sticking and release the detent tab. After this, have the person in the car floor it again and press down on the tv cable to see if theres slack. If theres slack on the cable bend the tv bracket itself back until you have none or VERY little.
