Grinding into Third
I'm putting a new clutch on my T5 the weekend after this one coming up. Its showing signs of wear and I'm doing it before it gets much worse (and the Atco run is coming up soon
)
All of a sudden I'm having trouble whenever I shift into third.
If I do it with any speed at all (ie-being quicker than 5 seconds in between gears) the thing GRINDS for 1/2 a second, then slips in.
I have a Ripper shifter, and ever since installing it 3 months ago haven't missed third.
So is this just another sign of clutch wear I wasn't aware of? Or should I look for some other problem while I have the tranny pieces apart in two weeks?
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks guys
EDIT: Before I posted I searched and found nothing. It might've been the computer I was on crapping out before the search was complete, b/c now I found a bunch of posts on the topic. Looks like my syncros (sp?) are starting to go. I don't wanna dump rebuild money into this T5, you think a fluid change (gonna happen when the clutch gets changed) would help out a bit?

Does it happen more when your tranny is cold?
Clutch wear doesnt cause that. Input shaft binding, bad syncros, chipped gears - all cause that.

Yes it only does it when the car is cold and I'm going into third the first couple of times before I get on the highway. Thanks for the reply

I recall reading that WC T5's were '88 and later trannnys. The
early ones had brass syncro rings like a Muncie 4-spd. It is
possible that the syncro ring is stretched or worn out. Does it
grind if you try to ease it into third with your foot off the clutch and the engine running? A good syncro ring will prevent you from grinding the gear. With a worn out one it will grind like a b*t*h.
