Tranny rebuild
I am going to be doing the 2.8-3.4 swap on my '89 camaro. It hass 134,000 miles on it, but the tranny shows no signs of its age. I was wondering if I should get the tranny rebuilt while I am doing this swap or if I should just wait and see what happens. Thanx
The transmission in my '87 T/A went 170,000 miles without anything more than a vette servo installed and filter changes here and there. The last 10,000 miles have been behind a mid 13 second engine, and they have been very hard miles (countless 1/8 and 1/4 drag passes and a day at a dyno) and when I finally took it apart (still running, BTW) the only thing wrong was the band was blackened (but still holding). Long story short, you will probably have enough "bugs" to work out after the engine swap (hopefully not) then to have to worry about the tranny being right as well. For now, if its not broke, don't fix it. Wait untill you get all the wrinkles ironed out with the engine, then beef up the tranny. Its lasted this long, I don't think going to a slightly larger V6 is going to be the straw that broke the camels back.
