question about my 700r-4 transmission

ok i'm new to the camaro stuff and i don't know much about cars yet. my question is, when i'm in park and i switch to reverse or drive, howcome the car jumps alittle bit, and how can i fix this??? i used to have an 86 camaro that did it, and now i have an 89 rs 305 that also does this. it's not a big jump or anything, i'm just wondering y it does that and if theres a way to fix it. thanks in advance.

Does the car idle high? Is the TV Cable working properly and is adjusted? IT would be normal for the '86 to do it, but not for the '89. Starting in '87, GM made revisions to the tranny to help address these concerns. The Drive range uses a foward clutch accumulator to cushion the apply, and the Reverse input housing went from a steel apply piston, to an aluminum piston with an orifice in it, that is eventually sealed off by the collapsing of a belville spring. This cushions the apply of the reverse clutches. Your '86 has none of these revisons, and therfore is normal for that tranny, however your '89 has ALL of them and is not normal. It sounds like line pressure in the tranny is to high. Has a "shift kit" ever been installed? How does it shift at part throttle?

yea the car does idle slightly higher than what it should when it first starts up, it idles at around 1000 - 1500 and when it's in drive it's usually 500 - 700 when at a stop. there's never been a shift kit installed to my knowledge and i doubt that there would have been since a middle aged woman owned the car before me... i'm not exactly sure what a TV is... i'm a n00b at this stuff. and as for shifting, it shifts nice and smooth at part throttle as it should (i'm assuming u mean while i'm driving down the road).

EDIT: also i forgot to mention that it does jump alot more if u switch from park to 1st gear instead of drive or reverse. not sure if that helps at all. also above i put 5k - 7k... i meant 500 - 700 rpms... 5k would be insane at a stop lol. come to think of it though... my car does kinda punch (like u can feel it push forward) into 4th gear and OD though when at part throttle

I don't think anything you are experiancing is out of the ordinary... esp. if you aren't letting the car warm up and idle down before moving it. If I start my car up and immediatly go to 1st it will bark the tires if I don't have the brake on. However, if you let the car warm up and idle down it is much more gentle. Probably has a lot to do with ATF temperatures...
