I have a t5 tranny in my 89 RS but it won't downshift into 3rd. It shifts up through the gears just fine and downshifts fine too except 3rd gear. What's wrong???

 

Sounds like your syncros are gone. You can get a rebuild kit from Hanlon Motorsports for around $150 and do it yourself. Also get the video they have for $20.

You will need a few extra tools to do the T5, but nothing that's very hard to come by. I did my T5 with the Hanlon kit and video, and it shifts better than when it was new. A shop quoted me $1200 to rebuild it, and I did it myself for $335. (I lost a cluster bearing and had to replace my cluster shaft for $155). But I still saved around $900 doing it myself.

Don't be afraid of a T5. Just get the video and you are set.
