the post topic says it all. Anyone have a recommendation on quality rear-end rebuilds or just plain used ones?

Always there when I need you, Ed. Thanks for the tip. Today I got a reply from ranchochevy.com, who said they had a rebuilt 3.23 with drums for $350 shipped.
I'll check out your recommendatio in a moment.

hey just checked it out. Really great selection. I just emailed them to see if any seals/bearings have been replaced or if they come 'as is'.
Now i'm debating on the 3.42 or the 3.23. Yikes. What would you do? But their prices are very reasonable.
Thanks alot.

What's your stock rearend ratio and engine/tranny?
If you don't race much, I'd go with a 3.23 or 3.42 so you can still live your mileage. I'm going with a 3.42 in my '91 RS, 305 TBI/A4 2.73 rear. The thing is just plain slow off the line/from a stop, and I'm not going to do many performance mods to it. It's my stocker with 27+ MPG.
I'm going to a 3.27 or 3.42 in my '88 Iroc 350 TPI/A4 2.77 since the TPIs already have plenty of torque. I don't want to totally ruin my mileage...for some reason it's crappy all of a sudden ..(???) I plan on installing the SDPC TPI crate motor sometime down the line and that will have PLENTY of power for me.
I'll just keep my Iroc's current 2.77 9 bolt around cause it's clean and purdy..
I'm pretty sure TA's rears will come as-is but I would trust their reputation. They're very reasonable price-wise also. It'll give you a reason to run down to FL for some sun and honeys!

Convertible, so stock 305TPI + 2.73 rear/A4 OD. Its my daily driver so I'm really leaning toward the 3.23. A little extra kick in the pants won't hurt my MPG too much. Plus, it'll be a little more fun to drive.
Your IROC sounds like a mean one. Was that the one you had in all the pics illustrating suspension install? MPG starting to suck? I'd think of the routine maintanence stuff that always seems to be the last things on my mind i.e O2 sensor, air filters, fuel filter. And also EGR.
Crate is yummy. Are you thinking about getting the 350/300hp TPI setup they have? Its a good deal. It'll prob be a good time to get an alum/hi-flo H2O pump since it does not come with one.
I did find a nice deal at rebuilt-auto-engines.com. @ $1200 for a rebuilt 350 with heads. The site gives all the details. I figure with the $900 I'd save from not buying the Crate, I could get headers and a suped-up 350 chip and the TPIS package.
I'm a poor grad student, so I like more bang with what little buck I have.
I think that the 3.27 would work out great in the IROC. Esp. if you got the Posi rear and got everything all tightened down and in-line.\\
I know how you feel about the slowness off the line. Here is what I experienced the other day and what I'm sure you feel too in the RS::
Slam the petal down, rear end sinks, and once you get going feels like your as@-end is all over the road, and there just isn't enough power. Well, at least it feels like that in the convertible.
Reallt gotta tighten down that independant rear in these cars, and seems like must have a 350 to really have some fun.
Anyway, rambling, I'll let you know about tacreation rear deal.
