oil leaks out back of transmission

Here's a strange one. I recently installed a new T56 and new drive shaft in my 3rd gen. When I lift the front of the car oil leaks out the back of the transmission. I seems to leak for a bit and then stop.

I have replaced the tail shaft seal which may have helped some. It used to leak a litte while driving, but now only when I lift the front.

It may be leaking a little oil around the seal but the majority of the oil seems to leak out a small hole in the back of the drive shaft yoke.

- should there be a hole in the back end of the drive shaft yoke?

- is there some internal oil barrier that should not be letting so much oil get to the yoke area?

This is really baffling me.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

Are you actually leaking motor oil out of your tranny? Or do you mean gear oil or ATF?

A new tail shaft seal will not eliminate leaks entirely. You may have too much fluid in the tranny to begin with.

It's leaking tranny oil, not motor oil. And it's mainly leaking out the back of the drive shaft yoke, not to much from the tail shaft seal.

My main question is should there be a hole in the back of the yoke or is this a manufacturing defect?

Some trannys have a sleeve with an o-ring seal on the output shaft which seals on a yoke such as the one you have. Your
tranny probably doesn't have the sleeve assembly installed. I'd
go to my friendly auto salvage yard and buy a yoke that didn't have the hole and install it. Or get a whole driveshaft ( the easy way out)

solution

There was a small hole in the back of the yoke. I filled the small
hole with epoxy on advice of a trans shop and no more leak!
