The easiest way is to get fittings and install it into the return line from the cooler.

The best way is to install it in the oil pan. I welded a flange onto the pan and installed the sender into the flange (bung).

You could do a combo temp sender/drain plug with the B&M drain plug kit, and a 1/4 pipe threaded sender unit. Just install it into the side of the pan as opposed to the bottom to avoid exposing the sensor to speed bumbs, gravel roads, exc.

You can also install it on the transmission cooler line going to the cooler from the transmission using a brass T fitting and compression fittings to attach it onto the the lines.

The guage itself depends on wheather it is a digital, analog, back lit, and so on. The general rule is there are four wires: positive, negative, sender and dimmer (if the sender unit uses ground for power transfer). If the sender has two wires going out of it, then the guage should have two for the sender.

The guage I used was a digital adjustable warning level gauge from JC Whitney, along with the adjoining sender unit. In total, without shipping, the guage and sender only cost me $50. I mounted it on the side pillar with auto meter's single gauge pod for the third gen camaro/firebird (Pn. 10201) for $25.

In all, it cost me 75 dollars for the trans temp gauge, and it was well worth it. Ill get some pics of the custom sender housing I used up as soon as I can.
