I need help, and lots of it.

Well, I bought an 86 Z28 yesterday. I bought it for $800 knowing that it would be a fixer upper type deal. Well it was having a smoking problem that turned out to be a leak in the transmission. I now need to replace the front seal on my transmission. I've been told by several people this is a pretty easy thing to do. Could someone break this down for me. I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to transmissions.

pull the seal and put the new one in, it's that easy. i use a slide hammer seal puller to remove seals with, saves a lot of time and effort. you do have to r&r the trans, but you knew that right?

OK...just making sure I understand...you knowingly bought a fixer-upper but don't know how to fix. And that made sense to you because....?

Check the cooler lines. A friend of mine had a leak that smoked real bad, but it was the the cooler lines dripping on the exhaust. It always started smoking at the most opportune times, like when we were at drive thru windows or waving at some girls or something messed up like that.

I knew it was a fixer upper....transmissions are something I'm not good with.....I am good with other things.....I don't understand how transmissions work......so I prefer to deal with engine problems or cosmetic problems......

I think it's a great idea - how else does someone learn to fix a vehicle....?

I don't disagree that a project car is a great thing, do-it-yourself is a great learning process. It's the people who won't buy a book, thinking they can learn everything here if they TTT enough, that don't add up.

I've got the chiltons. ....It covers the removal....it also says a bit about putting it back in......It's in......I'm having a little bit of trouble getting the dipstick back in......I've had better days.....I don't know for sure, but if I have any more transmission problems it might go see a professional......

I did it. I got the transmission out...the seal changed then I got it back in. No more leaking transmission for me.
