ZF - 6 speed

Whats the difference between ZF and a t-56? I can get one for $1,000 Is it the same mounting brackets as a t-56? I know the 91-2 firehawks had them. I just want to know what i need to do and the difference. Thank you. Oh it was out of a grand sport if that matters.

The ZF-6 Spd was a german made tranny. To fit a conventional SBC it would require the SLP adapter plate (good luck finding one), you would also need to do some custom modifications to the tranny tunnel and you will need to make a custom center console or use a 4th gen 6-spd console, the 3rd gen 5-spd console doesn't work too well due to the throw of the shifter. This all might sound like bad news but on the other hand they are virtually indestructable. They also need a special clutch assembly, called a dual-......something, I can't remember exactly, someone else here should know....

Uh, they only bolted the ZF to L98's in corvettes for a few years, so they do bolt right up to any pre-LS1 SBC.

My bad then, I knew it was used on LT5's and since SLP needed the adapter plate for the Firehawks I just asumed it was needed for standard SBC's....

They also put these in the early Vipers, very nice trans, can handle a lot of power.

The ZF will bolt right up to your L98 with no problem. However, in a Vette, the tailshaft was mounted to the rear differential using a torque arm. You will have to do some custom fabricating to mount it to a crossmember. Also, I think you'll have to shorten your driveshaft. With a T56, your stock driveshaft will fit. Try to talk to ZEBRA on the message boards. I'm pretty sure he did a ZF-6 swap into his car. He should be able to let you know about any other problems he encountered.
