I have been running GM gears in most the cars I build and I have had very few breakage problems(Thats low 12's in most even my 89 runs a 11.2 with a 7 5/8). You must either have a stick shift and rev and pop it or love to burn tires resulting in substantial wheelhop. Automatics usually don't shock the rear enough to break the gears. You never know how strong something is until you break it! Are you surprised you broke it?

Ya i'm pretty suprised it broke..and i have an l98 auto...when i do burn outs it never has any wheel hop, well at least any wheelhop that i can feel..i dont know..its my 2nd gear set in 5k miles..my car only runs in the mid 13's. could it be improper set up maybe? I had the same shop do both sets. I also have a TA support cover to help it out..well any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I think I would use a different shop. If that L98 is stock to mildly modified you shouldnt be breaking them that quick anyway. If you arent running slicks and are just driving on the street for the most part I doubt you should have been breaking them at all.

i SHATTERED my axles one night during an attempted 6000rpm launch....needless to say it felt really cool until the thing snapped its legs off.

i pulled out the carrier and cleaned everything, no gear damage

the gears are richmond 3.73's in a 7.5" 10 bolt

moser 12 bolt to come soon

hehe....well it would have been cool if the rear held out...the pass before that it went 12.7 the motor makes peak power at about 6800-7000

I've done a 3 gear installs so I'm no expert, but I'd say the setup has alot to do with gear life.

I did re-do a gear set in a Mustang in which the fool that installed it never check the pinion depth and the thing was making a gawd-aweful racket. It almost sounded like an airplane taking off in the trunk. I believe if I hadn't fixed them it wouldn't have been long for them to explode.

BOth time i've done my geat installs...i do the break in and change the gear lube a few times..and after about 2k miles it slowly starts whining then gets hella loud and grenades..4.10's a bad idea with the l-98? Would 3.42 be the better choice?

I think the problem that your having is that the shop your goin to is setting the gears up wrong I.E. (lash) and to me sounds like your following thru with the break in. So on that note I would find a new shop myself........Also you stated that you have a T/A cover and your breaking them then there is something definitely wrong cause my car with the 7.5 was running high 10's w/out any aftermarket cover just richmond gears and auburn unit.

I was running richmond 4.10's in my stock rear for 4yrs. till they couldn't take the abuse of me hitting it with the nitrous off of the line with slicks!
